Since 1966 the entire Romanian medico-legal system was
reorganized and the units from university centers became
Exterior Medico-Legal Laboratories subordinated to the
Institute of Legal Medicine "Mina Minovici" from Bucharest.
Since year 2000 all Exterior Laboratories were transformed into
Institutes of Legal Medicine, subordinated to the Ministry
of Health, based on the new law for medico-legal activity
(OG 1/2000). Our institute contains in it's structure laboratories
for pathology, toxicology, serology-biocriminalistics,
clinical legal medicine and prosecture.
Financial sources are mixed, from the public central budget and from
own incomes-tariffs paid by Police, Prosecution Offices, Tribunals, people, companies. For each forensic medical service there is
a tariff to be paid, established by Governement Decision. Forensic experts receive a fix salary independent of the amount of work they have to do. Each salary is within a range between minimum and maximum level depending upon professional performance and the leader of the Institute yearly re-evaluates it
Our Institute coordinates professionally the medico-legal
activity from Hargita and Covasna counties also, where
Medico-Legal Services exists subordinated to the local
